Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, announced that it is entering the hemorrhoidopexy market for the first time with EEATM Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set with DST SeriesTM Technology.

The instrumentation features advances in hemorrhoid stapler technology and design that address what surgeons say are their biggest challenges in performing the hemorrhoidopexy procedure. Covidien is demonstrating the new technology at the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons annual scientific meeting this week.

Hemorrhoids are one of the most common ailments in the U.S., affecting more than half the population, according to industry estimates. Stapled hemorrhoidopexy, in which internal hemorrhoidal tissue is internally stapled and excised, is considered a less painful alternative to surgical hemorrhoidectomy.

The EEA Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set is designed to facilitate each of the four steps in the hemorrhoidopexy procedure – dilation, purse-string placement, tissue incorporation and stapling and resection. It is the only circular stapler kit equipped with a detachable anvil with holes, transparent winged port and clear anoscope kit and bridge. These features allow for better tissue access and visibility and consistent results in purse-string placement, staple formation through DST Series Technology and tissue volume capture and incorporation.

Dr. Sang W. Lee, Associate Professor of Surgery, Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill-Cornell Medical College, said, “Before Covidien’s introduction of the EEA Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set, I think that the adoption of hemorrhoidopexy was limited, mainly due to the limitations of the device that was available then. Surgeons were frustrated because of poor exposure and difficulties in properly applying the device. I think that Covidien’s new hemorrhoid stapler changes all that. It provides significantly better exposure and clear visualization of underlying anatomic landmarks to facilitate the accurate placement of purse-string sutures, which is the key component of the operation. In my practice, I found that the new Covidien device allows me to provide more consistent results with outstanding clinical performance. I will not perform the procedure without it!”

As part of its commitment to evidence-based medicine, Covidien is organizing a clinical study involving the EEA Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set with DST SeriesTechnology. Covidien also is publishing a series of clinical experience papers.

What I found particularly interesting was that factors usually connected to hemorrhoids like anal sex, pregnancy, alcohol and spicy foods didn’t play a role when it came to thrombosed external hemorrhoids.

People suffering from hemeroids seldom think that there is a light after the darkness of having them. They don’t know if they can get rid of them or if they will have them for a long time. There are 3 types of hemeroids depending on where it occurs.

• Internal Hemeroids – involve the veins in your rectum.  Usually this type of hemorrhoid won’t hurt but there will be painless bleeding.

• External Hemeroids – involve the veins outside your anus.  This type of hemorrhoid can be very itchy and painful.  Sometimes there will be cracking and bleeding.

• Prolapsed Hemeroids – bulge outside your anus as it may stretch down.  This type of hemorrhoid may go back on its own.  You can also push it back inside gently.

What can I do about hemeroids?  To prevent constipation, include more fiber in the diet by eating fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, and wholegrain breads and cereals.  Drinking plenty of fluids each day and having a regular exercise also helps.  Avoid laxatives as it may lead to diarrhea, worsening your hemeroids.

To relieve the pain brought about by hemeroids, always take warm baths and use ice packs to relieve swelling.  Cleaning your anus is very important after each bowel movement using moist toilet paper or other moistened pads such as baby wipes or wet tissues.  You can also apply a cream with witch hazel to the area.  Numbing ointments are also available to ease the pain.  Hydrocortisone creams is also helpful in relieving itching and pain.

So what is the relation of hemorhoids to pregnant women?

Hemmroids is not that life threatening as you think it is. It is a common sickness which most pregnant women experienced and some are those in their 50s. But I am not saying that everybody who is pregnant or older may experience having this sickness. That is why we all need to be conscious enough with our health. Hemorhoids are quite common, and therefore, presumably, each of us knows someone who has or had a hemmoroid once. Piles are the most common disorders afflicting humanity. So what are bleeding hemroids and why do they bleed? Hemeroids are a pathological condition with dilated veins in and around the anus and rectum. Hemorhoids exist in basically two types – external and internal. External hemeroids occur outside the anus while the internal kind is found in the rectum. In both cases, piles can be seen or felt as knots. With internal hemeroids this is not always easy.

Other than bleeding hemroids can pose several non-critical issues like unpleasant pain, thrombosis, itching and irritation. Bleeding hemroids can be particularly troublesome. This leads to interference with normal daily activities as sitting on a toilet seat or passing stool. External hemmoroids can cause blood to drip from the anus while attempting normal daily chores. Internal bleeding hemroids produce fresh blood in the stool, with more or less pain and discomfort. The blood from internal hemeroids often appears on toilet paper after wiping or in the stool. Bleeding from a hemmoroid sometimes becomes worse during constipation, especially if the stool is very large or hard. If the water in the toilet bowl is lightly colored this might be a sign of bleeding.

Bleeding hemroids  can make a patient very shy. They also lead to social awkwardness and constant fear of exposure. However, thinking that hemorhoids continue to disappear over time, is nothing more than wishful thinking. Neglecting hemeroids can lead to a worsening of the situation and pave the way for a costly operation. Early attention will prevent future complications and late bleeding hemeroids.

Jing Wan Hung

A third Chinese herbal medicine for treating hemeroids is Jing Wan Hung. It relieves the pain of hemorrhoids, the burning and itching. It contains the following herbs:  Myrrh, Chaenomeles, Lobelia, Sanguisorba, Tang-Kuei, borneol, Frankincense, Carthamus, Pistacia.

Use these herbal combinations for one week only. If you do not see an improvement, go and see a doctor.

As there are many manufacturers of this hemroids treatment there will be differences in the quality of ingredients.
