Hemeroids are puffed-up veins around the anus. They are called internal hemeroids when they are on the inside of the anus or exterior hemeroids when they are in the vicinity of the opening of the anus. The condition is caused by pressure on veins in the rectal area. With a healthy person, blood fills the tissue of the anal area to help with bowel movements. Straining to move the stool can cause the vein tissue to swell, as do constipation and diarrhea. Expectant mothers can get hemeroids due to increased pressure on the pelvic region. During labor the condition can worsen. Overweight people might be more vulnerable to development of hemeroids. Internal and external hemeroids result in bleeding stool and burning in the rectal area. A doctor can diagnose hemeroids either by examining the rectum with his finger or with a short, lighted scope.
Most of the time a change in diet and bowel habit can bring relief. Doctors recommend to increase the amount of fiber in your nutrition, using a stool softener, prevention of sitting or standing in one place for long periods of time, avoiding lifting heavy objects and sleeping on your side if you are pregnant. Ointments might also help to relieve the symptoms of hemeroids. In most cases surgery is not needed. The goal of nonsurgical treatment is to make the protrusions shrink and disappear completely. If other therapies fail to help patients, surgery might be the answer. External hemorrhoids can be removed surgically if they are very big or if you have another kind of surgery in the rectal area. A very new method of removing hemeroids is the transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD). During the procedure, the problematic vein is located with doppler. A surgeon uses an absorbable suture to tie-off the arterial blood flow. As a result the hemmoroid will shrink. The whole procedure only takes 20 minutes and patients can go home the same day.
Whatever you do be aware that hemeroids get worse over time. The longer you wait the harder they become to eliminate. If you are already suffering from this excruciating condition why wait any longer. Get rid of your hemeroids now and stop risking more suffering, annoyance and embarrassment.
