Hemeroids are swollen and inflamed veins in and around the anus. While not easy to talk about for most people, they are widespread and affect almost half of all adults over 50 years. This is primarily because the tissue, the veins of the anus and rectum become weak and stretch with aging.

There are a number of reasons for a person to develop hemeroids. Obesity, pregnancy, family history or chronic diarrhea are some of the most common causes.

The symptoms of hemeroids are bleeding during and after bowel movement, itching or irritation of the anal area, a protrusion from the anus (external hemeroids) and pain. Typically, internal hemeroids do not cause complaints and can not be seen or felt.

Hemeroids can often be treated by changing the way you live. Try putting a few centimeters of water in your tub and squat or sitting in the bath two or three times per day. The swelling will surely decrease. Use a box of ice on the area to relieve swelling. There are many ways to get rid of the itching, bleeding and burning.

Once hemeroids are under control, there are several preventive measures: Drink eight glasses of alcohol-free liquids every day, eat foods high in fiber, exercise and avoid long periods of sitting or standing.

Hemorrhoids are usually not associated with cancer, there are a number of reasons for rectal bleeding, including anal and colorectal tumors. If you are uncertain at any point you should see a professional doctor.
