Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, announced that it is entering the hemorrhoidopexy market for the first time with EEATM Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set with DST SeriesTM Technology.

The instrumentation features advances in hemorrhoid stapler technology and design that address what surgeons say are their biggest challenges in performing the hemorrhoidopexy procedure. Covidien is demonstrating the new technology at the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons annual scientific meeting this week.

Hemorrhoids are one of the most common ailments in the U.S., affecting more than half the population, according to industry estimates. Stapled hemorrhoidopexy, in which internal hemorrhoidal tissue is internally stapled and excised, is considered a less painful alternative to surgical hemorrhoidectomy.

The EEA Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set is designed to facilitate each of the four steps in the hemorrhoidopexy procedure – dilation, purse-string placement, tissue incorporation and stapling and resection. It is the only circular stapler kit equipped with a detachable anvil with holes, transparent winged port and clear anoscope kit and bridge. These features allow for better tissue access and visibility and consistent results in purse-string placement, staple formation through DST Series Technology and tissue volume capture and incorporation.

Dr. Sang W. Lee, Associate Professor of Surgery, Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill-Cornell Medical College, said, “Before Covidien’s introduction of the EEA Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set, I think that the adoption of hemorrhoidopexy was limited, mainly due to the limitations of the device that was available then. Surgeons were frustrated because of poor exposure and difficulties in properly applying the device. I think that Covidien’s new hemorrhoid stapler changes all that. It provides significantly better exposure and clear visualization of underlying anatomic landmarks to facilitate the accurate placement of purse-string sutures, which is the key component of the operation. In my practice, I found that the new Covidien device allows me to provide more consistent results with outstanding clinical performance. I will not perform the procedure without it!”

As part of its commitment to evidence-based medicine, Covidien is organizing a clinical study involving the EEA Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set with DST SeriesTechnology. Covidien also is publishing a series of clinical experience papers.

Most people don’t like to talk about them but ignoring hemeroids completely won’t make them go away. In the last months I’ve written about lots of ways to get rid of piles, mainly drinking lots of water, eating fiber-rich foods and not sitting for prolonged periods of time. North Dakota-based TV station KFYR claims that all this won’t make hemeroids go away.

According to their research surgery is the only way to go. But as most people don’t even talk about hemeroids to their doctors they found another person that removes piles with a completely different method: physical therapist Elizabeth Jones.

Jones’s method isn’t new. It has been around since the 1940s and is called the Keesey technique. However it is not completely without pain. During this procedure which is also known as hemorrhoidolysis the swollen veins are touched by an electrode. The electric current forces the hemmoroid to change inside. It shrivels into the lining of the colon. The acual treatment only takes a few seconds. And one can apply the electrode to multiple hemeroids during one session. Afterwards, so Jones says, people can go home instantly without any pain whatsoever. The article sadly doesn’t mention what this procedure costs but is says that Blue Cross Blue Shield covers it while Medicare does not. This method only works with internal hemeroids.

For external hemeroids there is a procedure called rubber banding. This means that a rubber band is applied to the hemmoroid and covers it completely. Blood flow is reduced and the protruding vein falls off in about a week.

While hemorrhoidolysis and rubber banding certainly sound effective I always would choose a natural method over some medical procedure. Especially for people who don’t like to talk to anyone about their piles let alone show them there are much better ways to get rid of hemeroids fast while doing it in the privacy of your home.

First of all it is important to understand what hemeroids are, then, why they come back. Hemeroids are like varicose veins, except these veins are in the anus. Pressure is exerted in the vein continuously until the vein walls collapse, that’s where hemeroids come from.
